Recently, the Beijing Municipal Health Commission launched the “Safeguarding Health in the Sunset Years” Silver Age Action, organizing retired medical and nursing experts to provide free clinics and consultations at the Beijing No. 1 Social Welfare Institute. With superb medical skills and compassionate hearts, the experts brought care and attention to the elderly residents, showcasing the vitality and value of their continued contributions in their retired years in this new era.
Focusing on actual needs and building on a service-oriented approach, the Commission conducted multiple rounds of research and consultation with the welfare institute beforehand to assess the specific needs of the elderly residents. Based on departments like cardiology, hypertension, and respiratory medicine at Anzhen Hospital, a “Silver-Haired Expert Team” was formed by selecting experienced retired and active specialists from municipal hospitals. The team also included specialists from the Urology Department of Friendship Hospital, Orthopedics Department of Jishuitan Hospital, and Geriatric Psychology Department of Chaoyang Hospital. Furthermore, leveraging Anzhen Hospital’s retired Communist Party member team, the event set up nursing service stations for blood pressure and blood sugar checks, ensuring both professionalism and relevance.
At the event, the senior experts quickly got to work despite travel fatigue. Faced with a steady stream of elderly patients, they listened attentively, examined medical records carefully, and used their rich clinical experience to answer questions and provide guidance on treatment plans. Among them were Dr. Yu Zhenqiu from the Hypertension Department, Dr. Mi Shuhua from Cardiology, and Dr. Ding Shaofang from Respiratory Medicine at Anzhen Hospital, Dr. Wang Wenying from Urology at Friendship Hospital, Dr. Zhang Chunyu from Orthopedics at Jishuitan Hospital, and Dr. Shi Yunmei, a psychological consultant at Chaoyang Hospital. Each offered professional and heartfelt medical advice, explaining disease management, prevention, medication use, and even teaching practical exercises suitable for seniors. On the day of the event, the experts served a total of 86 elderly residents, the youngest being 71 years old and the oldest 94, aiming to meet their individual health needs as much as possible.
This free clinic and consultation initiative aims to provide a platform for retired experts to continue contributing their skills while promoting the expansion and grassroots accessibility of high-quality medical resources. Participating experts expressed, “Although retired, after a lifetime of work, we still want to use our professional expertise to protect the health of the people.” Going forward, the Municipal Health Commission will continue to carry out similar activities, enabling more people to access convenient and high-quality medical services, and contributing the power of senior professionals to the construction of a Healthy China and Healthy Beijing.
