Zhang Junting, former deputy director of the Department of Neurosurgery, Beijing Tiantan Hospital, chief physician, professor, doctoral tutor, is an expert with outstanding contributions in Beijing, enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, who is also a national advanced worker, and a member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. With his guidance, the diagnosis and treatment technology of brainstem brain tumors in neurosurgery in China has been upgraded to the international advanced level. Many colleagues and patients praised his selfless work attitude, exquisite surgical skills and excellent surgical results, which is regarded as the "first surgeon in Asia" in the field of neurosurgery.

Since the late 1980s, as the technical backbone of neurosurgery department, Zhang Junting undertook the main work of the pioneering project of "intramedullary spinal cord tumor and brainstem tumor" under the guidance of Academician Wang Zhongcheng. In the arduous study process of this subject, he consulted a large number of literatures, carried out basic experiments, and constantly broke through the surgical difficulties combined clinical experience. He summed up a set of clinical experience and treatment standards for spinal cord and brain stem tumors, which is easy to promote, from the surgical approach, microsurgery operation skills, neurological protection and postoperative neurological rehabilitation. Zhang Junting also won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award as the main accomplisher. At present, the professional group led by Zhang Junting has finished more than 300 cases of complex operations of various brainstem every year, which not only ranks first in the world, but also in the world leading level in terms of surgical resection rate, postoperative survival rate and disability rate.

The experience and skill level of Zhang Junting has been getting more and more famous. The number of patients who come for treatment has been rising as well and many of them are overseas Chinese returning to China from abroad. Mr. Zhou, an overseas Chinese, had undergone surgical treatment in a foreign authority because of a huge intracranial tumor. Due to the difficulty in resection of the tumor, only a small part of the resection was performed, and the patient lost blood more than 4000 ml (equivalent to the total blood volume of an adult). In desperation, the patient returned to China to seek medical treatment and went to Beijing Tiantan Hospital. At that time, the patient had a huge tumor with a diameter of 8 cm, and the tumor was extremely rich in blood supply, wrapping important nerve vessels. After careful preparation and repeated discussion before surgery, Zhang Junting led the surgical team to do the surgery for more than 10 hours, and finally completely cut the tumor. After the operation, the patient recovered well. The eyes that had been blind for more than 3 months before the operation were able to see the light again. Such medical miracles have caused strong repercussions in society and are constantly being reported. Many patients came to Beijing Tiantan Hospital to seek advice from Zhang Junting. Zhang Junting said: "My time of the outpatient clinic is very limited. I will try to talk more about it and let the patients and family members feel more relieved." In addition, in order to facilitate remote patients, the neurosurgery team of Beijing Tiantan Hospital led by Zhang Junting goes to other cities for clinics almost every year. Their footprints are all over the central and western provinces. Zhang Junting has personally led the team to carry out voluntary surgery for local patients. As a doctoral and postgraduate tutor in neurosurgery at Beijing Tiantan Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University, Zhang Junting has trained more than 30 graduate doctors and masters. Currently, there are 5 doctoral students and 2 postgraduates. Zhang Junting also undertook the teaching tasks of undergraduate and postgraduate students and advanced doctors in the Capital Medical University. In addition, Zhang Junting also served as the deputy director of the Neurosurgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the chairman of the Neurosurgery Branch and the deputy director of the Skull Base Surgery Branch of the China International Exchange Promotion Association for Medical and Healthcare. "Spring means not one flower, but hundreds of flowers blooming." Adhering to the concept that only the vast number of young doctors and grassroots doctors improving their diagnosis and treatment, more ordinary people could benefit from it, Zhang Junting makes full use of the opportunities of ward rounds teaching, classroom lectures, academic conference exchanges, etc. to share his experience to young physicians without reservation. In addition, the national HD video broadcast using the Internet for difficult surgery is also a work that Zhang Junting’s annual routine. The local doctors can also be immersed in the situation, feel the exquisite skills of the top neurosurgeon masters, and communicate at the right time without coming out of their hospitals.
