I. General Situation of the Epidemics
During the 20th week of 2009 (from 0 a.m.on May 18 to 12 p.m.on May 24), 3,558 cases of 16 legally defined infectious diseases with 2 cases of death (one case of hepatitis B and one case of tuberculosis) are reported in 18 districts and counties in Beijing. Among them are 1,290 cases of 11 categories of Type B infectious diseases, up 5.91% compared with last week and down 8.83% compared with the same period of last year respectively. The top five diseases reported are as follows: dysentery, tuberculosis, hepatitis B, syphilis and scarlatina. In addition, there are 2,268 cases of 5 categories of Type C, up 6.53% compared with last week and down 24.60% compared with the same period of last year respectively.
II. Focus on the Epidemic
(I) Type A H1N1 Influenza
This week 4 cases of Type A H1N1 Influenza are reported and confirmed. As of the 20th week, reported and cofirmend cases total at 5 in Beijing.
(II) Measles
This week, 55 cases of measles are reported in Beijing, down 36.78% compared with last week and down 33.73% compared with the same period of last year. Among them, the top three districts and counties with the most cases are Chaoyang, Fengtai and Haidian districts, accounting for 52.73% of the total cases. Most infected are scattered-living children, students and service personnel, accounting for 60.00% of the total cases.
(III) Chicken Pox
A total of 503 cases of chicken pox are reported this week, 15.03% lower than last week and 34.42% lower than the same period of last year. The top five districts and counties with the most cases are Chaoyang, Haidian, Fengtai, Daxing, Tongzhou districts, accounting for 68.59% of the total cases. Those infected are mainly students and preschool children, accounting for 73.96% of the total cases.
(IV) Hand-foot-mouth Disease
A total of 1,093 cases hand-foot-mouth disease are reported this week, 6.22% higher than last week and 32.53% lower than the same period of last year. The top five districts and counties with the most cases are Fengtai, Chaoyang, Haidian, Daxing and Changping districts, accounting for 65.42% of the total reported cases. The patients are mainly scattered-living children and preschool children, accounting for 94.78% of the total reported cases.
III. Precautions
Following last week’s initial report of 1 confirmed case of Type A H1N1 influenza, Beijing reports another 4 imported cases of Type A H1N1 influenza are confirmed this week.
Recently with more and more resort persons back to China from high-prone regions of Type A H1N1 influenza, Beijing Municipal Health Bureau requests all levels of disease prevention control institutes and community health services to strictly implement Beijing Municipal Health Bureau’s Notice on Conducting Health Monitor to Homecoming Persons, issue Health Tips to Homecoming Persons, closely monitor their health status. Moreover, the prevention and control strategy of Type A H1N1 influenza in Beijing has shifted from “One Gateway, Two Key Points” to “One Gateway, Three Key Points”. It means the management authorities shall not only focus on prevention and control of Type A H1N1 influenza at hospital and homes, but also at schools, so as to ward off epidemic outbreak in schools.
This week, the situation of other infectious diseases is stable. Hand-foot-mouth disease continues to rise slightly. Measles drops the way down, compared with last week and with the same period of last year, but Changgouyu Coal Mine in Fangshan District reports outbreak of measles epidemic with 16 cases. Beijing Municipal Health Bureau requests all related departments to continuously perform the prevention and control of key infectious disease such as hand-foot-mouth, measles, chicken pox, while paying high attention to the prevention and control of Type A H1N1 influenza to ward off the outbreak of such epidemic.
