Epidemic Situation of This Week(2011,04,04-2011,04,10)

I. Overview

During the 14th week of 2011 (from April 4, 2011 to April 10, 2011), 1620 cases of notifiable disease were reported in Beijing, including 9 deaths (from hepatitis B (3), tuberculosis (2), AIDS (2), hepatitis C (1) and hepatitis E (1)) were reported in Beijing, 3.25% up than last week. 11 kinds, representing 713 cases, of Category B infectious diseases in total were reported this week, 22.50% up than last week, with dysentery, tuberculosis and scarlatina as the top three in terms of case number. 907 cases, representing 6 kinds, of Category C, were reported this week, with other infectious diarrhea, hand-foot-and-mouth disease and epidemic parotitis as the top three in terms of case number reported.

II. Major diseases 

 (1) Measles

907 cases were reported this week, 7 more than last week but 62 less on YoY basis. By the 14th week of 2011, 30 cases were reported accumulatively in Beijing, 94.08% down on YoY basis

 (2) Dysentery

188 cases in total were reported this week, 19.75% up than last week, mostly occurring among scattered-living children and the retired people. By the 14th week of 2011, 1994 cases were accumulatively reported in Beijing, 0.50% down on YoY basis.

 (3) Scarlatina

95 cases in total were reported this week, 4 cases less than last week, mostly occurring among kindergarten children and students.

 (4) Chicken pox

350 cases in total were reported this week, 5.11% up than last week, mostly occurring among students, kindergarten children and scattered children.

 (5) Hand-foot-and-mouth disease

145 cases in total were reported this week, 62.92% up than last week, mostly occurring among scattered children and kindergarten children. By the 14th week of 2011, 625 cases were accumulatively reported in Beijing, 68.86% down on YoY basis.

III. Key reminders

As the weather is getting hotter, Beijing is to enter peak season of intestinal infectious diseases. Healthcare and epidemic prevention departments at all levels shall strengthen monitoring and reporting of intestinal infectious diseases. "Early warning, early report and early treatment" are required to prevent intestinal infectious diseases and food poisoning; Health monitoring departments at all levels shall enhance monitoring and enforcement towards food and restaurant industry to ensure food safety; actively hold promotion and education events on health and disease prevention to help the citizens develop self protection awareness and health lifestyle.
