After being burned by either acid or alkali, the skin will become red and swollen and festered, resulting in intense pains. You should flush acid or alkali substance off from the burned skin repeated with a lot of clean water and the earlier, cleaner and more thoroughly the skin is flushed, the better. Otherwise, any trace of residuals will deteriorate the burn. Do not get hesitated by more serious pain caused to the patient by the flushing. Instead, we should encourage him to flush the skin with patience until it becomes clean altogether. Any burn a result of any alkaline substance may be flushed with table vinegar in order to naturalize any alkali liquor which may remain on the skin
It should be noted that if being burned by quick lime, the grains of quick lime must be wiped out from the skin with a handkerchief before being flushed with a lot of clean water. In this case, the burned skin must not be flushed with water first as quick lime will react chemically with water and the resulting high heat may burn the skin again.
After getting clean with clean water, the burn surface should be covered softly by polishing gauze and the patient should be sent to a hospital for further treatment.
