Recently, an ambulance team from the Xicheng Emergency Sub-center of the Beijing Emergency Medical Center, comprising Yue Chong, Cui Haoyang, and Wang Xinyu, received a dispatch call reporting an elderly patient found unconscious at home and unresponsive to family members. Medical treatment was urgently needed. The team responded immediately and rushed to the scene. En route, physician Yue Chong contacted the family by phone to gather more information. The family reported that the patient had gone to bed after dinner and was later found unconscious when they checked on him. Dr. Yue promptly provided telephone medical guidance, instructing the family to place the patient in a lateral position and remain at the patient’s side. He also advised them to promptly clear any vomit in case of nausea or vomiting to prevent aspiration and the risk of suffocation.

Upon arrival, the emergency personnel quickly carried medical equipment into the home and conducted an initial physical assessment and vital sign monitoring. The results showed a normal electrocardiogram, normal blood glucose levels, but critically low oxygen saturation. Combined with unequal pupil size and irregular breathing patterns, Dr. Yue made a preliminary judgment that the patient was in critical condition. He immediately ordered emergency oxygen therapy. According to the medical history provided by the family, the patient had long-term uremia requiring regular hemodialysis and had recently experienced dizziness and a fall. Dr. Yue informed the family that the patient’s condition was severe, with possible serious craniocerebral injury or a cerebrovascular event, and that immediate hospital evaluation and treatment were necessary.

With the family’s consent, the team transported the patient under close monitoring of vital signs. During transport, continuous and adequate oxygen therapy helped stabilize the patient’s condition. Then patient was sent to the hospital and was quickly admitted to the resuscitation room via a pre-established “green channel,” securing valuable time for further treatment. Throughout this emergency mission, the ambulance team demonstrated rapid response and professional expertise. On this early spring night, they embodied the mission of emergency responders—not only racing against time with skill, but also offering warmth and reassurance to those in need.

Beijing 120 Health Reminder:

Patients with uremia require long-term hemodialysis. Due to systemic metabolic disorders, they are prone to multiple complications. In particular, the 12 to 24 hours before and after dialysis represent high-risk periods for disease exacerbation. During these periods, patients may develop electrolyte imbalances leading to malignant arrhythmias, or experience heart failure and even sudden cardiac death due to underlying cardiovascular conditions. In addition, systemic heparin anticoagulation used during dialysis may increase the risk of severe conditions such as intracranial hemorrhage and gastrointestinal bleeding, which can be life-threatening. Family members of patients undergoing hemodialysis should closely monitor their condition. If any abnormalities are observed, prompt medical attention is essential to reduce the risk of adverse events.
