“My wife is over seven months pregnant. She suddenly feels dizzy, can’t stand, and is sweating!” One early morning, the Command and Dispatch Center of Beijing Emergency Medical Center received a distress call: a pregnant woman had suddenly developed hypoglycemia, her symptoms were worsening, and her consciousness was fading — the situation was critical and required urgent medical attention.

Upon receiving the order, the ambulance crew from the Yuegezhuang Emergency Station of the Fengtai Branch immediately set out. Doctor Qi Wenlong assessed the patient’s condition over the phone and guided the family to perform emergency measures: “Have her lie flat, don’t let her get up, and give her a small amount of sugar or a sweet drink right away.” Nurse Wang Ziqing and stretcher-bearer Yan Hailong quickly gathered the emergency equipment, while driver Zhang Xiao, relying on his rich experience, drove swiftly to the scene.

When the team arrived at the residential complex, the pregnant woman was sitting on the sofa, pale and covered in cold sweat. Her voice is weak. The emergency staff immediately measured her blood glucose — only 2.9 mmol/L. Prolonged hypoglycemia could cause the woman to fall into a coma and threaten the baby’s oxygen supply, putting both mother and child at serious risk.

“Establish an intravenous line and administer glucose immediately!” ordered Dr. Qi. Nurse Wang skillfully carried out the procedure. The emergency team closely monitored the patient’s condition while gently reassuring her, “Don’t worry, the sugar will work soon, and your baby will be fine.” Within five minutes, the patient’s dizziness eased, her consciousness became clearer, and her blood glucose rose to 4.8 mmol/L.

Considering that hypoglycemia can recur during pregnancy, the crew decided to transfer the patient to the hospital for further examination. On the way, Dr. Qi used the pre-hospital/in-hospital coordination terminal to open a green channelwith the hospital’s emergency department. Nurse Wang continued to monitor the patient’s blood glucose and vital signs and patiently reminded her, “During pregnancy, itis necessary to eat regularly, and carry snacks or candies with you. If you feel dizzy or shaky, you could rest and seek help immediately.”

Soon, the ambulance arrived at the hospital. The emergency personnel gave a detailed handover to the receiving doctors, providing essential information for subsequent examinations and treatment guidance. The patient was later discharged in good condition after observation.

Beijing 120 reminds you: During pregnancy, the body’s metabolism speeds up. Irregular eating or overexertion can easily trigger hypoglycemia. If symptoms such as dizziness, cold sweats, or confusion occur, it is necessary to promptly consume sugary foods or drinks. In severe cases, call 120 for immediate medical assistance.
