In the fast-paced rhythm of emergency medical rescue, every mission represents a wholehearted effort to safeguard life. Recently, the Dongcheng Emergency Station of Beijing Emergency Medical Center successfully completed a tense and high-risk patient transfer, safely transporting a patient weighing nearly 400 jin (approximately 200 kilograms) diagnosed with chronic pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) to a hospital. This timely intervention secured valuable time for subsequent treatment and fully demonstrated the team’s professionalism, courage, and resilience.
The mission began when the 120 Beijing Emergency Dispatch and Command Center received an urgent call: a patient suffering from chronic PAH required immediate transfer to a specialized hospital for further care. Dr. Zhang Jie’s emergency team responded to the assignment without delay and set off at once.
Chronic pulmonary arterial hypertension is a pathological condition characterized by abnormally elevated pressure in the pulmonary arteries, caused by various known or unknown factors. Patients with PAH often experience shortness of breath and fatigue after minimal activity, along with dizziness and chest pain. In severe cases, it can be life-threatening. For such patients, even slight vibrations or insufficient oxygen supply could become the final trigger for a critical event. What made this transfer even more challenging was the patient’s extraordinary body weight, which introduced unprecedented difficulties in both handling and transportation.
Upon arrival at the scene, the emergency team found out that the patient was extremely anxious and family members were visibly distressed. Nurse Feng Wenxuan and driver Ma Xin immediately stepped in to comfort and reassure the family. Meanwhile, Dr. Zhang Jie conducted a comprehensive and methodical assessment of the patient’s vital signs. The medical team then communicated with the family, clearly explaining the risks associated with transferring a patient of such considerable size and critical condition. They assured the family that every possible measure would be taken to ensure the patient’s safety. The family expressed their understanding and full cooperation.
During the on-site lifting and transfer process, every move by the emergency personnel required flawless coordination and precision. Dr. Zhang and Nurse Feng closely monitored the patient’s oxygen saturation levels throughout the operation. Working with hospital staff, driver Ma Xin and the stretcher technician executed the transfer under unified verbal commands. After nearly 40 minutes of careful maneuvering, the team successfully and safely moved the patient into the ambulance.
During the transfer, driver Ma Xin maintained full concentration. He reduced speed in advance of every turn and uneven patch of road to minimize discomfort to the patient. Inside the vehicle, the medical staff continuously monitored the patient’s condition and offered verbal reassurance to help stabilize his emotional state. Racing against time, the ambulance finally arrived safely at the receiving hospital, where medical personnel were already standing by and immediately took over the patient’s care for follow-up treatment.
This successful and challenging transfer mission not only showcased the exceptional expertise and capability of the emergency medical team, but also served as a powerful testament to their unwavering commitment to the principle of “life above all.” In this critical race against time, the emergency crew—armed with skilled techniques, fearless dedication, and a profound sense of responsibility—built a solid and reliable line of defense for the patient’s life and health.
