On the afternoon of March 4, 2025, Zhang Jiayi’s ambulance team received an urgent call. A worker in a park had suffered a foot injury after being struck by a steel channel and required immediate medical assistance. The team promptly set out for the scene and attempted to contact the patient’s friend en route. However, due to his anxious state and strong accent, the team struggled to understand the exact location details. Realizing the urgency, driver Li Kaiqi quickly reassured him, saying, “I have a rough idea of where you are. Please have someone wait by the roadside to guide us. There are too many entrances here. I will drive along the road—let’s make sure we don’t miss each other.” Meanwhile, upon learning that the patient’s injured limb was already deformed, Dr. Zhang Jiayi immediately instructed him over the phone to keep the limb as still as possible to prevent further injury.

Time was critical, and the ambulance sped safely toward the destination. Based on the caller’s description, they first searched from the park’s south gate to the east gate but saw no one waiting to meet them. Li Kaiqi called again to obtain a more precise location. On the other end of the line, the voice was filled with panic and confusion, making it difficult to piece together a coherent sentence. Patiently, Li Kaiqi guided him: “Take your time, don’t panic. Look around and tell me if you see any distinctive buildings.” Drawing from his extensive experience, he successfully deduced the exact location.

Upon arrival, the emergency team found the patient’s ankle severely fractured and visibly deformed. It seemed frightening even through his thick clothing. Nurse Guo Shumin quickly prepared bandages, sterile gauze, triangular bandages, and a SAM splint. The medical team worked seamlessly to cut open the clothing and remove the injured limb’s shoe and sock. Dr. Zhang Jiayi immediately issued instructions: “Cover the wound with sterile gauze, then place a triangular bandage over it for additional padding before securing the dressing.” Guo Shumin carefully held the injured limb in place while Zhang Jiayi molded the SAM splint to stabilize and fix it. Stretcher-bearers Yao Kainan and Wang Hongmao swiftly but cautiously lifted the patient onto the ambulance. The team then rushed him to the hospital for further treatment.

On the road, they learned that the patient was a construction worker who had been lifting a steel channel as usual when he suddenly lost strength, accidentally dropping it and fracturing his foot. Throughout the transport, he remained conscious with great willpower, earning the deep sympathy and admiration of the medical staff. Upon arrival at the hospital, the team swiftly transferred him to the emergency department, completed the handover, and departed.

Both at work and in daily life, safety must always be a top priority. Protecting our health is the foundation of all efforts and aspirations. By raising awareness of safety precautions and minimizing risks, we can better face the challenges in life and embrace a brighter future.
