Recently, the Xilu Emergency Station in Fangshan District received an urgent directive from the dispatch center about a 3-year-old child who was experiencing airway obstruction leading to asphyxiation and required immediate emergency care. Upon receiving the call, driver Liu Ziqi quickly started the ambulance and notified the team members. Upon hearing that the patient was a 3-year-old child, on-duty physician Deng Guilan’s heart skipped a beat. However, she immediately composed herself, called the child’s family to inquire about the situation, and guided them on performing the Heimlich maneuver over the phone.

The family, following the phone instructions, performed the emergency maneuver while the ambulance increased speed, ensuring safety. At that moment, the sound of the child crying was heard on the other end of the line, and everyone in the ambulance let out a sigh of relief.

Upon arrival at the child's home, Dr. Deng Guilan and Nurse Gao Qianqian performed a brief examination and confirmed that the asphyxiation had been relieved, but further checks were needed at the hospital. On the way to the hospital, the child had not yet recovered from the shock. To help calm the child, Nurse Gao gently held the child in her arms, and soon the child relaxed. After successfully delivering the child to the emergency department, the family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the team for their quick and professional response.

Warm Reminder from 120: Young children are often curious about objects within reach and may chew or bite them, which can easily lead to airway obstruction. Parents need to stay vigilant and provide attention and education, to prevent such accidents. If a child exhibits abnormal symptoms, immediately call 120 for emergency assistance. It is necessary to listen carefully to the dispatch doctor’s instructions and perform any feasible emergency measures. The sooner the intervention, the higher the success rate.
