Recently, late at night, the Changxindian Emergency Station in Fengtai District received an urgent call: a 3-year-old child was experiencing a high fever and convulsions, requiring immediate medical attention. The emergency doctor immediately guided the parents over the phone on how to administer first aid, while the medical team rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, the emergency doctor turned the child’s head to one side, and the nurse administered anticonvulsant medication and oxygen, following the doctor's instructions. After receiving the medication, the child's condition significantly improved and the consciousness gradually returned, alleviating the parents' anxiety. The child was then quickly transported to the nearest hospital for further treatment.
Important Reminder from 120:
Febrile convulsions are common in children aged 6 months to 5 years, typically occurring within the first 24 hours of a fever, often when the body temperature is rising rapidly. When it happens, the child’s temperature usually exceeds 38.5°C and may present with symptoms such as rolling eyes, stiff or twitching limbs, cyanosis of the lips, clenched teeth, and a unconsciousness. If your child experiences a febrile convulsion, it’s important to stay calm, and lay the child on their side or tilt their head to one side. Never place anything in the child’s mouth, and do not attempt to restrain their limbs to stop the convulsions. It’s helpful to note the time and characteristics of the convulsions, call 120 immediately, and follow the dispatcher’s guidance for appropriate first aid.
