In the process of growth and development, young children are particularly curious about surrounding things. They often try to "explore the world" with their mouths. They could put any kinds of things into their mouths to taste and feel, which may be threatening while they are exploring. Among the foreign objects swallowed by children rescued by Beijing 120, there are small and round objects, such as coins, glass balls, buttons, etc., or spiked things, such as pins, iron wires, etc. There are also some liquid or toxic substances, such as washing spirit or battery. Even if the swallowed foreign body does not get stuck in the airway and cause suffocation, it may scratch the esophageal wall and cause a perforation of the digestive tract. It is necessary to closely observe the child’s condition and seek medical attention in time. If a foreign body is stuck in the airway unfortunately, first aid measures should be conducted immediately, otherwise the child may be dead due to asphyxia. The Heimlich method is a very effective daily first aid method, and it is recommended that parents should learn to master it.
Heimlich method for adults: 1. Stand behind the patient; 2. Use both hands to wrap around the waist of the patient from behind, hold a fist between the lower edge of the ribs and the belly button with one hand, and grasp the fist with the other hand; 3. Press inward and upward quickly to form an impulsive airflow to rush out the food lumps blocking the trachea and throat and repeat the above method until the foreign body is pushed out.
Heimlich method for children over 2 years old: 1. Kneel behind the child’s back, place both hands between the child’s belly button and sternum, make a fist with one hand, and wrap the fist with the other; 2. Tighten both arms firmly and press the child’s chest instantly; 3. Press the chest for several times continuously until the tracheal blockage is removed. Repeat the above method until the foreign body is pushed out.
Heimlich method for infants and children under 1 year old: 1. Hold the child's mandible with one hand and place the arm against the child's chest; 2. Hold the child with one hand, make the child face down and lie on the rescuer's knee; 3. Pat the baby firmly on the back between the shoulder blades for 5 times, and then make the baby face up; 4. Press the chest with the index finger and middle finger on the lower half of the baby's sternum for 5 times; 5. Repeat the above actions until the foreign body comes out.
Note: Do not hold the baby upside down by the feet and slap the baby from the back. Not only will the baby not be able to expel the foreign body, but he or she may get injury to the cervical spine. If it is liquid foreign body, you should unblock the baby’s respiratory tract by blow two breaths. If the air cannot be blew into the respiratory tract, there might be the foreign body blocking it.
