It's already 11 years since Beijing commenced the activities of creating health village. By improving the water quality, transforming lavatories, preventing pests and diseases, rural health in general has been greatly improved.

The creation of Health Village is the focus of the work of Beijing Patriotic Health Campaign Commission in rural areas aimed at changing the appearance of urban and rural sanitation, improving the sanitation and health in rural areas. From the beginning of the activities of creating health village in rural areas to carrying out the "three-in-one" model village construction, to the development of the "Beijing Health Standards", "Beijing Health Village Assessment and Evaluation Program and Acceptance Criteria", procedures composed of the declaration of creation, inspection and instruction, inspection, acceptance and naming have been formed. As of the end of 2007, 1,164 villages in Beijing have been named "the Beijing Municipal Health Village."

This year, the construction of Beijing Municipal Health Village has been included in “Folded book Projects” as one practical thing the government does for the people. It was originally planned to construct 80 Health Villages, but more than 140 were declared by the districts and counties.

The objective of constructing Health Village in rural areas is to create a clean and tidy living environment for the villagers. As a result, the village health assessment involves a number of criteria, for example, strict standards for quantitative assessment have been made for village appearance, health, disease prevention, water quality improvement, lavatory reconstruction, getting rid of "four pests", as well as health education. Taking health education as an example, it is stipulated that the Health Village should have regular health education publicity columns to publicize knowledge of disease prevention and self health care. Through health education, more than 70% of the villagers should be aware of the health information like "no-smoking, reduce salt, limit oil and less alcohol" and more than 60% of the villagers should acquire healthy behaviors. The evaluation criteria also stipulated that tap water should be available for 100% of families and the universal use of harmless "family toilet", the use of shell type garbage can and the timely garbage removal should be guaranteed.

Health Village brings the villagers' life the following changes:
First, the creation of health village effectively promoted the development of rural health, and received the support of the masses. Secondly, the investment environment was improved, which promoted the coordinated development of rural economy and various social undertakings and improved the living standards of villagers. Thirdly, the health awareness of the masses was further enhanced, and more people acquired healthy behavior and learned knowledge about health. Fourthly, rural infrastructure construction has been greatly developed, and the environment has been further improved. According to statistics, at present, 72 villages have met "the Beijing Municipal Health Village Standards", and the work of inspection and acceptance of the other villages is in progress. Rural tap water supply rate has reached 100% of households. Harmless transformation of the toilet has been substantially increased. 142 villages have been provided with cleaning workers. 125 villages introduced close management on garbage. 104 villages have completed the transformation of the toilet. 125 villages have completed the transformation of drinking water. And there are health education promotion column in 89 villages. In the past three years, more than 140 villages have no epidemic and "four pests". This work provides a solid guarantee for the new rural development and has been recognized and welcomed by the masses.
