It’s World Heart Day on September 27.
According to statistics of the World Heart Federation (WHF), 1 out of 3 deaths of people on earth is caused by cardiovascular diseases. Around the world, the number of people that die of heart diseases or apoplexy is as high as 17.5 million each year. In view of that and to arouse attention of the public to cardiovascular diseases and related hazardous factors, in 1999, the WHF designated the last Sunday of each September as “World Heart Day".
Since the 1980s, the morbidity rate of cardiovascular diseases and apoplexy has been on a significant rise in Beijing area. By 2006, deaths caused by cardiovascular diseases had accounted for 44% of Beijing residents' total deaths and become their No.1 killer.
In addition, cardiovascular diseases aggravate residents’ economic burdens. As shown by a national survey on medical services in 2003, total expenditures in our country caused by diseases of this kind reached as high as RMB 276.2 billion, accounting for 23% of total expenses for all diseases. Furthermore, the spread of major hazardous factors in relation to cardiovascular diseases in Beijing area is an even bigger worry. In 2005, among adults over 18 in Beijing area, the morbidity rate of hypertension was as high as 29.1% but its control rate was only 10.6%; the morbidity rate of abnormal blood lipid was as high as 33.2% and the rate of diabetes was 6.6%; people suffering overweight or obesity accounted for 49.6%, male smokers 57.7% and those with inadequate physical exercises 46.0%.
Both the morbidity and mortality rates caused by cardiovascular diseases, as a kind of disease that originates from unhealthy life style, can be fundamentally reduced as long as a healthy life style can be adopted. Medical researches show that hypertension, obesity, smoking, abnormal blood lipid, diabetes, inadequate physical exercises, etc. are all major hazardous factors that lead to cardiovascular diseases. Consequently, we call for a healthy life style characterized by low-fat diet, frequent physical exercises, abstinence from smoking and over-drinking, limited intake of salt and oil, for it can dramatically reduce the morbidity rate of such diseases. With its permanent theme as “A Happy Life with a Healthy Heart", World Heart Day is committed to calling for people to take concrete actions to change their undesirable life habits or additions, with a hope that everybody will enjoy a healthy life with a healthy heart.
To reduce the morbidity and mortality rates caused by cardiovascular diseases and to control the related major hazardous factors, the Beijing Municipal government and its medical care subdivisions at various levels have performed their functions to the greatest extent and integrated the administration on treatment and control of chronic diseases like cardiovascular diseases into their regular work regarding community-based medical services. Meanwhile, they’ve also adopted a number of specific policies and measures to prevent and control cardiovascular diseases. For example, as one of the major hazardous factors for those diseases, smoking is strictly prohibited in public places, which alleviates the damage of smoking or second-hand smoking to people's health; special salt spoons, oil containers and things alike are distributed among residents to reduce their intake of salt and oil from diet; and public fitness equipments are installed in communities to facilitate residents to conduct physical exercises.
Gentle viewers, the long holiday of National Day is drawing near. People always spend each long holiday in visiting relatives and friends, traveling and dining together. These activities will disorder their normal life and dieting habits, and are likely to lead to various chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular ones. In view of that, we hereby remind viewers to take care of their health, refrain from smoking and over-drinking and avoid overtiredness and crapulent conduct. In addition, viewers should live an orderly life, properly do physical exercises and have a pleasant holiday in an easy and relaxed way.
