The 50th Anniversary of Foreign-Aiding Medical Team of Beijing, Servicing Countries Such as Guinea

The year of 2018 was the 50th anniversary of the first dispatch of a foreign-aiding medical team of Beijing. Since 1968, Beijing has sent 50 groups of medical aiding teams to 11 countries and regions, for a total of 939 people. Among them, 26 teams of 700 medical staff were dispatched to Guinea and established close cooperation with the Guinean health authorities in clinical diagnosis and treatment, disease prevention, scientific research and personnel training.

From April 25 to April 27, 2018, Lei Haichao, director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning led a team to Conakry, the capital of Guinea, to visit medical aiding team members. He also held talks with the Ministry of Health of Guinea and visited Conakry University, the Sino-Guinea Friendship Hospital and the Astin Hospital. During the visiting, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning and the Guinea Ministry of Health jointly organized the first China-West Africa Medical Forum. The Chinese volunteer doctors groups conducted training exchange activities in Guinea and held a ceremony to donate medicines and equipment. The Sino-Guinea Friendship Hospital unveiled a trauma treatment center and a Chinese language training center.

The 50th anniversary of the dispatch of medical aiding team in Beijing was also held in Conakry during the same period. Guinean President Conte, Prime Minister Yura, Minister of Health Diallo, and Ambassador Bian Jianqiang of the Chinese Embassy in Guinea attended the reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Guinea. President Conte spoke highly of the prominent role played by the Chinese medical team in promoting the health exchanges and non-governmental friendship between the two countries. On behalf of the Guinean government and people, he thanked China for its sincere help in the development of the medical and health services in Guinea. Conte said that the two countries have deep traditional friendship and the Chinese medical teams are the best witness for the friendship between the two peoples. Guinea is willing to further expand friendly cooperation in various fields between the two countries and produce more fruitful results. Bian Jianqiang paid tribute to the Chinese team members who had given assistance to the Guinean medical development, and expressed sincere gratitude to the two government departments and people from all walks of life who have participated in and supported medical and health exchanges for a long time. He highly affirmed and praised the medical team for their contribution to the friendship between the two countries.

At present, the 26th medical team that is working in Guinea is composed of medical personnel from Beijing Chaoyang Hospital. The 27th medical team will be set up by Beijing Jishuitan Hospital.
