On October 27, 2023, the 120 vehicle crew of Longwantun Town Health Center received a task. A tourist accidentally sprained his foot while hiking. He was unable to walk and needed emergency treatment. The first aid crew set off immediately. On the way, the doctor contacted the patient to learn about the injury and location, and provided comfort and first aid guidance.

After arriving at the scene, the crew carried first aid medicines and equipment and quickly started climbing the mountain with the 119 firefighters. The mountain road was full of gravel, drifting soil, thorns and weeds, and many places were steep slopes that went straight up, requiring using both hands and feet to pass. About an hour later, the crew finally arrived at the patient's side. The doctor ignored the fatigue and immediately examined the injured area for the patient. The injured person's calf and ankle joints were red, swollen and painful. It could be a suspected fracture. The medical staff applied bandages to the patient and immobilized the joints with splints.

After the on-site first aid was completed, the medical crew, working with the police, safely carried the patient to the ambulance at the foot of the mountain after 2 hours. After going down the mountain, the emergency medical staff checked the patient again. After confirming that the situation was stable, the ambulance crew safely transported the patient to the hospital for further examination and treatment.

Here are some tips from Beijing 120. In late autumn and early winter, when the red leaves are blooming in Beijing, citizens should pay attention to keeping warm and take protective measures when hiking. Once a joint sprain occurs, the patient should not continue walking. It is necessary to sit down and rest in a safe area. Do not rub or turn the injured joint to avoid aggravating the injury. You could apply ice packs or cold towels to the injured area to help reduce swelling, pain, and muscle spasms. After 24 hours, you could switch to hot compresses. If there is redness and swelling in the injured area, it is recommended to apply ice, apply pressure to it with a bandage and elevate the affected limb. To avoid fractures, it is necessary to call 120 when necessary and send the patient to the hospital in time for further examination.
