Weekly First-aid Topic: Rational emergency calls for timely treatment of critical diseases
From:Beijing Municipal Health Commission
Date:12/30/2022

"120" is a unified national telephone number for medical emergency rescue. When an accident occurs, dialing 120 is the most direct and important way to approach the emergency medical service system for professional assistance. The 120 dispatch command center will send an ambulance to the scene to carry out professional rescue of the patient and send the patient to the hospital. Under the current situation, the general public should maintain the smooth operation of the life hotline, maintain first-aid awareness, master first-aid skills, and jointly build a social first-aid system, so that critically ill patients can receive timely and effective treatment.

Under what circumstances should you call the emergency number 120? Once the following situations occur outside the hospital (at home, public places, outdoor places, etc.), you should call 120 immediately for help.

1. Sudden illness, such as coma, chest pain, dyspnea, convulsions and other acute and critical symptoms.

2. Accidental injury, such as serious bodily injury caused by car accidents, life accidents or criminal cases.

3. Emergencies, such as fire, drowning, electric shock, poisoning, earthquake, stampede accident and other disaster accidents.

4. Various other unexpected factors causing major problems in life and health when medical help is necessary.

Please understand that the acceptance capacity of 120 is limited. Improper calls to emergency numbers will occupy social emergency resources, causing patients in need of emergency assistance losing their opportunities in time, which would indirectly cause infringement of the rights and interests of others. In order to keep the 120 lifeline smooth, please do not call 120 in the following cases.

1. Health consultation. 120 is a dedicated telephone number for emergency medical assistance. It cannot provide accurate medical guidance for personal health management, drug adjustment for chronic diseases, daily outpatient medical treatment, etc. Please consult the relevant professional organization for these problems.

2. Interpretation of epidemic policies. With the adjustment of the COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control policies, many citizens do not know much about the relevant policies, and a large number of epidemic consultation calls occupied the 120 emergency resources. At present, Beijing has carried out categorical management of personnel involved in the epidemic. Asymptomatic patients could test at home, and mild patients could go to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Critically ill patients could call 120 directly for help in case of emergency outside the hospital. For the interpretation and implementation of other epidemic-related policies, it is recommended to consult other relevant departments at your residence area.

3. Malicious harassment. According to law in China, illegal acts of maliciously calling 120, occupying emergency resources, and interfering with the normal operation of 120 will be punished by law.
